• Exodus 12:3 A lamb for a house.... Each father's duty to provide a lamb for his family's protection. (And that is what Father God is doing by providing the perfect lamb for the household of God) [those who adopted sons and daughters of God.]
• Exodus 12:5 A lamb without blemish -- we covered this in previous sessions on the lamb requirements
• Exodus 12:6 ... kill it in the evening (Symbolic of Luke 23.44-47: There was a darkness over all the earth [during the crucifixion of Jesus].)
• Exodus 12:7 ... take the blood and strike it on the two side posts and the upper door post. (Does not include the threshold). (Symbolic of John 10:7,9 where Jesus says that He is the door of the sheep.)
• Hebrews 10:28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: (From Deut. 17.6).
• Hebrews 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace.
• Hebrews 2:3 how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation.

1a. Passover roasted with fire

Exodus 12.8 - Roast with fire

• Fire pictures God's acceptance of the sacrifice.
• Remember our study where fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifice as acceptance?
• Also the Egyptians often ate raw meat in offering sacrifices to their idols. So this also showed the Israelites that they must make a clear break from all the ways of the Egyptians.
• We also in the New Testament must flee from the ways of religion and go by the Bible.

1b. Unleavened bread

Exodus 12.8 and with unleavened bread
Leaven means to ferment and turn sour and hence is used in the sense of corruption.

• Matthew 16:11-12 - leaven of false doctrine
• Luke 12:1-2 - leaven of hypocrisy
1. 1 Corinthians 5:6 - leaven of malice and wickedness
2. 1 Corinthians 5:7 - purge out the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump.
3. 1 Corinthians 5:8 - therefore let us keep the feast --- with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
• Leaven represents evil and sin. Observe that Israel could not eat the lamb without unleavened bread.
• Neither can the believer partake of Christ while holding to false doctrine, hypocrisy, and sin.
• We must purge ourselves from these that we might feast at his table. "Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity" 2 Timothy 2:19

1c. Spiritual food.

Exodus 12:8, 9 - eat the flesh

• From the law the Jews knew that eating was figuratively used of partaking.
• In the new testament eating is used as one way of symbolically partaking of spiritual food. 1Corinthians 10:3; Revelations 10:10.
• John 6:51- I am the living bread --and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
• John 6:56 - He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
• Believing what he did on the tree, then, would be partaking or eating of his flesh and drinking his blood.
• In the act of giving his flesh for the life of the world He has provided His flesh and His blood for the believer to freely partake of. (See also 1 Corinthians 11:20, 1 Corinthians 10:16, Matthew 26:26)

2. The death angel

• Exodus 12:11 - For I will -- smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt...
• Exodus 12:13---And the blood shall be to you for a token.-- When I see the blood I will pass over you.
• Exodus 12:23 - For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two sideposts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come unto your houses to smite you.
1. The blood was a sign on the houses, an evidence of divine protection. The devil could not touch that which was covered by the blood.
2. What this is telling us is that for the blood covering to be effective we must abide in him. 1 John 2:6, 24, 28, all; John 15 all; 2 John 9
3. 1 John 1:7 If we do not walk in the light as He is in the light, the blood of Jesus Christ his son does not cleanse us from sin.
4. Hebrews 12:14 - Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
• Our present protection can be removed by walking in any darkness. This reveals why holiness is a must.
5. Exodus 12:22 - none of you (talking about the firstborn) shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. He was on the inside the house and remained there until morning.
• There was one condition, however, for the blood covering to be effective. They were not permitted to go out of their homes. (This is the same way today with us. We cannot afford to be outside of Christ.)
• He was not able to see the blood that covered him and protected him.
• Neither can we by natural sight see the blood that covers us. The firstborn had to accept by faith that he was covered by the blood. We must also accept by faith what our Father has done for us.
• The firstborn could not see the blood nor feel the blood but he was covered just the same.
• 2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
6. Matthew 5:17: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

The New Testament fulfillment

• Hebrews 8.6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much more also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
• Hebrews 8.7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
