Is man a spirit
Is man a spirit?
Some people are teaching that man is a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body. Is this biblical?
In this article we will discuss:
1. The Theory
2. Renewed by the Holy Spirit
3. Quickened by the Holy Spirit
4. Preserved by the Holy Spirit
5. Our thoughts discerned by the Word of God.
6. We shall be changed.
7. We shall be raised.
8. We do have a spirit.
9. Who we are.
11. Other Reference verses.
1. The Theory:
Genesis 2:7 Man became a living soul.
Luke 23:46 --Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
Some people say: See it says right here that your spirit goes back to God, so the real you must be a spirit. Actually, we need to
look at the bigger picture and look at all the scriptures on the subject because in the very next chapter Jesus again says:
Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
Now this was AFTER he was resurrected. So what are we? Let us look at a few items!
2: Renewed by the Holy Spirit
John 3:5 Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom,
John 3:6---that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (Reference 1-Strong's 4151)
Reference (1) Strong's 4151: Pneuma, the rational and immortal soul and spirit.
Titus 3.5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of
regeneration (salvation) and renewing (reference 2-Strong's 342) of the Holy Spirit.
Reference 2: renewing: Romans 12:2 transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Reference 2: Strong's 342: to renovate, to renew
I don't think it is any accident that Jesus was trained as a carpenter. The symbolism is terrific. He has sent the
Holy Spirit to remodel our minds, to rebuild us, to renovate us unto holiness as we spoke about in part one.
3: Quickened by the Holy Spirit
John 6:63 It is the Spirit (reference verse 2 & 3) that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto
you, they are spirit (2b) , and they are life.
Reference verse 2: Romans 8:2 For the law (2b) of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Reference verse 3: 1Corinthians 15:45 The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening
(Reference verse 4) spirit.
Reference verse 4: John 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them, even so the son quickeneth
(Reference 6-Strong's 2227) whom he will.
Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that received up Christ from
the dead shall also quicken (Reference 6: Strong's 2227) your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Reference 6: (Strong's 2227) - vitalize, make alive, give life eternal, quicken
4: Preserved by the Holy Spirit:
1 Thessalonians 5:23 I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5: Our thoughts are discerned by the word of God:
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick (Reference verse 8), and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to
the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner (Reference verse 9 & 10) of the thoughts
and intents of the heart.
Reference verse 8: Jeremiah 23:29 Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces.
Reference verse 9: 1 Corinthians 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced
of all, he is judged of all:
Reference verse 10: 1 Corinthians 14:25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will
worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
6: We shall be changed:
1 Corinthians 15:51 We shall all be changed (Reference verse 11)
Reference verse 11: Philippians 3:21 Who shall change (Reference verse 12 & 13) our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto
his glorious body,
Reference verse 12: 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that,
when he shall appear, we shall (Reference verse 14) be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Reference verse 13: 1 John 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Reference verse 14: Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that
he might be the firstborn of many brethren.
7: We shall be raised:
1 Corinthians 15:52 The dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
8: We do have a spirit:
Matthew 26:41 The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Acts 7:59 ...Lord Jesus, receive my spirit
1 Peter 3:19 preached to the spirits in prison.
Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit.
So we do have a spirit and it gives us the ability to communicate with God.
9: Who we are:
Matthew 22:37 -- Thou shalt love the Lord with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
It doesn't say anything about the spirit.
Matthew 27:52-53 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after
his resurrection and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
It appears that the real you includes the body.
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy
both soul and body in hell.
It appears that the real you includes the soul.
1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such a one unto satan for the destruction of the flesh that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
So it appears that our spirit is also involved in the real you.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear,
we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1. The spirit is the immortal soul: John 3:5
2. Jesus' body had flesh and bones: Luke 24:39
3. The Son quickeneth us and gives us eternal life: John 5:21
4. The Spirit also quickens our mortal bodies: Romans 8:11
5. Our body will be like his glorious body: Philippians 3:21
6. This mortal must put on immortality: 1 Corinthians 15:53
7. I didn't find a single scripture that said the real me was only a spirit!
Instead, it appears that the body, soul, and mind is involved. And this is the Hebrew understanding of who man really is. We are
incomplete without all three; otherwise, why would we need or look forward to the resurrection?
This is why Jesus ate with them (Luke 24:43) after his resurrection and had them touch Him so they could see that He was NOT just
Jesus had a glorified body that could eat, disappear, and reappear. And 1 John 3:2 says that we will be just like that. We will
have an incorruptible body of flesh and bones, but not blood per Luke 24:39. In this scripture Jesus says He is not just a spirit,
but has glorified flesh and bones.
