How to renew our mind

Renewing your mind with the Word of God.

In our church service we sing a song called "God says you're going to make it". Let's define what it means.

In previous articles we covered some of the weapons of warfare:
Ephesians 6:10 Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.
Ephesians 6:11 Stand your ground
Ephesians 6:13 Withstand
Is is on this last point that I want to elaborate.

  1. Ignorance of God's will: People don't understand that it really is God's will that they think like He thinks.
  2. 2 Corinthians 5:21: For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

If we are born again, we are righteous. It's not our righteousness; it's God's righteousness! I was wicked but, thank God, I'm not wicked anymore! I have forsaken my old ways, and now I operate in God!s ways. I WAS unrighteous, but I met a man called the Righteous One. I accepted Him as my Savior, and He gave me His righteousness.

Confess your sins to God, forsake them, receive His forgiveness, and then FORGET them! Don't let the devil condemn you. If it is under the blood, then tell the devil to get lost. The blood has been applied to those thoughts and actions and God has forgotten them. You're safe. You are a child of the king.

Quit letting him drag them up again. He WILL try. Failure to Renew your Mind with God's Word.

Romans 12:2 Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

A person whose mind is not renewed with the Word of God won't speak in line with God's Word. Or what he speaks will be from his mind and not his heart. The power of God is not produced by head faith; the power of God is produced by heart faith. And heart faith is a result of a renewed mind. Confession is important, but if your mind is not renewed, it will not produce results.

This is why people are disillusioned about the confession movement. They promote: Blab and grab; or Confess & possess. It doesn't work that way. In this article we will find out what does work!

Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayst observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

We are to read, study, and ponder the Word of God day and night. Ponder means to think on it and rehash it continually, with the goal of letting the Holy Spirit get it into our spirit. You can't put the Word into action successfully without making it a reality in your spirit man.

After we meditate on the Word, and get it into our spirit, we are to DO the Word. The Lord has done all he is going to do about our victory and success. He made it available on the Cross. We must apply the Word to our lives to bring the kingdom of God into our world as God intended.

Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

What do you do when you get hungry?? You go to the Kitchen table where the food is. If you find your life lacking in some area, just keep coming to the banquet table to eat of the Word. Dig in. Feast on it. Eat all you want. It's fat free. There are no calories.

Now let's watch our table manners. You are sitting at God's banquet table. Be polite.

Talk with your host. Compliment HIM.
Oh, Lord God, I thank you for your Word.
I praise you for loving us enough to give us guidance.
Please pass me the bowl of healing.
Holy Spirit, help me to understand the Word.
I need to taste of your Goodness.

Don't gulp your food. Chew on it. I wonder what this Word means? I think I will look up the Greek. Savor it. Think about it. That's what Joshua 1:8 & Proverbs 4:20-22 means.

Matthew 4:4 Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word [4487 - rema - spoken (revelation)] that preceedeth out of the mouth of God.

God wants to speak the Word into your spirit. Then it goes from the historical word to the revealed word. That is what we want - the revealed Word. The Holy Ghost would not tell us to have the mind of Christ if it were not available to us.

EXAMPLE: My first healing when saved (1969): Studied Bible for 6 month's on topic of healing. Chewed on it, used the concordance, checked the Greek, meditated, pondered, until I was convinced (FULLY persuaded) [Romans 4:21]

My first healing was fast. I was fully persuaded that if Jesus was still involved in mankind, that he still healed.

A more recent healing with my cat took over a week (The cat could not climb a single step on the stairs). I prayed, praised, proclaimed, had patience, and persevered. The cat was healed in a week or so and now zooms all over the house and up and down the stairs. God likes variety! Don't put Him in a box about how He answers your prayer.

Hindrance of Impatience
Luke 8:15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the Word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
Hebrews 10:36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Failure to cast down imaginations

2 Corinthians 10:4, 5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Casting down imaginations means to cast down thoughts! What kind of thoughts? Every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, against the mind of Christ. Every thought that is contrary to the Bible we are to cast down. We are not to think or dwell on it. No one is immune to having a wrong thought come to us. Having the thought is not sin. They are mostly from satan. They are coming, so we must know what to do with them when they show up.

How to Cast Down wrong thoughts and bring them captive to Christ.

Example: Suppose you are on a new venture, new job, new responsibilities, etc.

Answer: 1 Corinthians 1:9 and 1 Corinthians 10:13 God is faithful....
Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but His Word will never pass away.
Philippians 4:19 My God will supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

When the devil challenges your faith, you can answer his challenge with the Word. You can cut him off with the words "It is written". Tell him he is a liar and feed him the Word.

Watch him gag and whine and crawl out the door! That's the power you have over the enemy. When you do that, you are bringing those evil thoughts into captivity. You are banishing those thoughts from your thinking. Why is this important? Because if your thinking is wrong, your believing will be wrong and you faith will waver.

Let's reflect a minute about what your thinking patterns have been over the last week and especially about what you have been saying. Have your words been agreeing with what GOD has SAID? Sometimes casting down imaginations will mean refusing to listen to what other people say, because sometimes imaginations come through other people's mouths!

You can confess all you want, but all you are going to possess is a sore throat. You can blab all you want, but all you will grab is air.

When you possess God's revealed will in your spirit.

AND: When your believing lines up with your thinking.
When you have repented and forsaken current sins the Holy Spirit has revealed.
When you have talked to the Father about His will in the matter.
When you get a revelation from God that this is for you now!
When your faith lines up with God's word.

,/p> THEN: When you pray. When you declare, When you take authority, God's power is going to be released.
Things are going to happen in the spirit realm.
Angels are going to listen.
Demons are going to tremble.
GOD is going to step into the situation.

You can't follow the crowd and succeed with God. Remember Joshua and Caleb? They didn't follow the crowd. See Numbers 13:1-33. They had a good report. They agreed with what God had said. You can't be a crowd follower or crowd pleaser.

Stick with the Word and the Word will stick with you. When you stick with the Word, some people will say bad things about you and call you a religious fanatic. Some of my own family call me a religious nut, crazy and a fanatic. I just grin and agree with them. I am a fanatic for Jesus. Have you come to the point yet where what Jesus thinks about your actions is more important than what people think?

Let us stick with the Word.
Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised.)

But your faith must be in the revealed word and not just in the historical word. Don't get ahead of your faith. This is a journey, not a one time event. Patience!

Casting before Confessing:

Confession is only part of the picture. If your thinking is wrong, your believing is wrong and confessing is a waste of time. We have to do some casting down of some of our thoughts before we can successfully do some confessing. Otherwise our minds are not properly tuned to the mind of Christ.

Have you ever driven a car that needs a tune up? It bucks, sputters, and is hard to start. Recently I bought gas for my car and it had water in it. The car bucked, sputtered, died, and ran rough. It wasn't until I put some gas antifreeze in the tank that it ran ok. Is that the problem with your faith? Back to the banquet table to feast on the Word to smooth out your faith and understanding. There are some conditions involved that we will talk about in other articles.

You can pull down "High Things".
Let's compare 2 Corinthians 10:5 with Ephesians 6:12.
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

We don't wrestle against flesh and blood. What we wrestle with is higher than that. Now, anything that puts itself against the Word of God is too high. We have to deal with those high things and let them know that the knowledge of the Word of God is the highest thing that exists. Since God tells me to cast these things down in 2 Corinthians 10:5, then I must have the ability to do so. When wrong thoughts come, I have the ability to reach up by faith in my heart and pull those thoughts down.

When these thoughts try to rise up and take a high place in my mind, I tell them, "Oh, no, you don't. Come back down; begone!" And Jesus remains on the throne of my heart and my mind. When we cast them down, we are walking by faith and not by sight or feelings or vain imaginations. We can make Jesus Lord over every situation in our lives. We do that with the Word- by taking every thought captive to that Word. We are commanding that our lives line up with what God has said and not with what things look like.

It doesn't matter to me if my life appears to be going the wrong way. It's not going to go that way if I cast down imaginations and bring them captive to Christ or to the Word. When a wrong thought comes floating into your mind, you can't just start following after it. No, you have to CAST IT DOWN, and then shoot it with the word. Get that Word out and cut it to shreds.

Sword example:
Holy Spirit, I need your help.
Thought, I take you captive. Wack (with the Word).
I cast you down (Wack).
God says that I can do all things thru Christ Who strengthens me. (Wack)
My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Wack)
I rebuke you and command you to flee! (Wack)

Wrong thoughts come to Everyone:

Having wrong thoughts doesn't mean you are a bad person. Wrong thoughts come to all of us. It's what we do with the thoughts that count. When you are praying, you are bound to get thoughts to eat, clean your room, bad thoughts, or whatever. Take them captive. Maybe you're tormented with wrong thoughts. Don't let the devil lie to you any longer. Don't let him tell you that success and happiness are for others, but not you any longer. Learn to take the thoughts captive.

Rise up and resist the devil with the Word. If you do, James 4:7 says he will flee. Actually, the more you try to walk with God, the more wrong thoughts may come at you at first until you get better at rebuking him. The devil has to try to fool you on a higher plane. He can't send any wimpy thoughts like he used to. The devil doesn't want you walking close to God. If you're reading, studying, and meditating on the Word regularly, the devil will try to sabotage you, diverting your thoughts from the Lord. He will try to infiltrate your thinking, get you sidetracked, and eventually get you sidelined.

You need to make up your mind today that you are going to get into the Word and be a doer of the Word, casting down imaginations and bring every single thought captive to what God has said. You can have the mind of Christ. You can transform your personal world, or your life, with the Word of God. You can be a winner, not a loser. That is why we sing "God says you can make it" in our church service.

REFERENCE: HOW TO HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST: Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be followers (imitators) of God as dear children.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

The mind of Christ is produced in us first by our hearing the Word of God and letting it become implanted in our heart as we depend on the Holy Spirit to make it real to us. Then our heart, which is our spirit, speaks to our mind, and our mind is renewed with the Word so that we can think as Christ would think. Then we can confess and come into full agreement with what God says we are. We can begin to say the same thing that God says about us. That is confession which is based on the Word of God.

This kind of confession is simply agreeing with God. Whatever God says I can do, that is what I'm going to say I can do. This kind of confession has NOTHING to do with feelings. You can't go by your feelings and agree with God at the same time. But the Holy Spirit must give you the revelation first. You can't just start spouting verses without having your mind renewed and expect anything to happen. You can't think about or focus on your failures, weaknesses, and shortcomings and at the same time agree with God.

Certainly if you have sinned, you need to repent, forsake it, and ask God to forgive you. But don't go digging into your past mistakes if they have already been confessed, repented of, forgiven, and forsaken. Receiving from God is not dependent on how many times we have or have not missed the mark, but on his mercy and grace. You can't condemn yourself or let the devil condemn you. You need to focus on Jesus and not feelings or failures. All thoughts from God will line up with His Word. The devil will shoot into your mind from the outside. He will constantly make suggestions to you about how bad you are and try to formulate thoughts in your mind that do not line up with the Word of God. Cast them down with the Sword of the Word of God.
