If you have read the last two short articles on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, you know that every Christian should have this gift. We also mentioned that since it is a gift, it cannot be earned. You don't have to be worthy in order to receive it. Also, you do not have to tarry to receive it. They only had to tarry initially because God wanted the original Baptism to take place on Pentecost. After that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with tongues happened as soon as people were prayed for.
The only thing that might hinder a person from receiving would be fear of what other people might think, unconfessed sin, unchristian attitudes, or an unforgiving spirit. These things would also hinder answers to other prayers as we will see in other articles. The baptism can be received anywhere: in church, at home, in the car, at a shopping center, or anywhere else. The only prerequisite is to have received Jesus Christ as your savior. Then to get the baptism all you do is believe and receive. If you are going to receive it yourself at home or some other private place:
Here your faith must be put into action. Remember the story of Peter walking on the water? [Matthew 14:22-31.] Nothing happened until he got out of the boat. Peter had to do his part. It is the same here. You have to do your part. You are to step out of the boat and speak with your own lips and voice. The Holy Spirit will give you the words as your speak.
Look at Acts 2:4 "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and [they] began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." They spoke and the Spirit gave them the words.
As you yield your tongue with stammering lips [Isaiah 28:11] a new language will be formed, either immediately or slowly as you learn to yield to the Holy Spirit. As it says in Isaiah 28:11, you may stutter or stammer at first. In my case I started with the stuttering and stammering and received the language slowly. In my wife's case she received a fluent language immediately.
Keep on speaking in faith. It is important to continue speaking until you are familiar and comfortable with speaking in tongues. You need to understand that you can start or stop whenever you want with your private tongues. The Holy Spirit is always there and ready to give you the utterance at any time. Satan will throw doubts at you, so continue speaking for awhile, stop, and then continue speaking until you are comfortable that you can start again whenever you want.
Remember that you will not know what you are saying. It will sound like gibberish. It is not. If you listen to a lot of foreign languages today, they sound like gibberish also if you don't know the language.
You are not supposed to understand the language. According to 1 Corinthians 14:14, your spirit is praying. You mind does not need to understand the tongue. The tongue is for edifying the spirit, not the mind. How to use your private tongues.
Remember that your private tongue is for your own private use. It is not to be used in the church for the entire assembly to hear. If the Holy Spirit ever wants you to give tongues in church, He will probably give you a different tongue for that church service only. This tongue is only given to a person as the Holy Spirit wills and only when the Holy Spirit wants it given.
Since the purpose for the tongues is partly to edify your spirit, you need to spend some quality time praying in tongues. Your spirit won't learn much in 5 or 10 minutes at a time. It would be nice if you could spend at least 30 to 45 minutes at a time each day praying in the spirit. Do that for 30 to 40 days and you will never be the same.
Praying in the spirit that often will build your spirit up, increase your faith, and allow the Holy Spirit to move in a greater way in your life. It will allow the Holy Spirit to introduce more of the supernatural life to you. This is usually done by giving you faith for more answered prayers or even some of the other gifts of the spirit. See Jude 1:20-21.
Speaking in tongues often is the key to moving in the power of the Holy Spirit and to build yourself up in your faith. [See Jude 1:20.]
Speaking in tongues gives the Holy Spirit more access to your spirit to train it and make it more receptive to hearing and receiving from the Holy Spirit. You can't train your spirit in a few minutes a day. It would be good to work up to several hours a day praying in the spirit if you want the Holy Spirit to move mightily through you. Praying in the spirit gives us more access to the other gifts of the spirit as your spirit is properly trained.
Some people receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit like a merit badge. Once they have it they think they have arrived. How wrong they are. The baptism is only the doorway into the supernatural.
It appears that we are filled with the Holy Spirit when we pray for it as we mentioned previously. I suspect that as we are confronted with our sinful environment that we need to get ourselves cleansed from defilement of the world and to get our eyes on the things of God anew. As we do this and pray in the spirit, I believe that the Holy Spirit can then cleanse us and manifest Himself and work through us.
I think that praying in tongues also helps to keep us focused on God and His ways and makes our spirit available for use as God ordains. See the Scriptures above.REFERENCES:
